Chiropractic Helpful For Hypothyroidism

Chiropractic care is beneficial for hypothyroid dysfunction, according to researchers at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.

The investigators looked at the use of the mind-body neuro-emotional technique (NET) in two cases of primary hypothyroidism. "In both cases, there were improvements in TSH and T(4) levels, both returning to normal levels."

The study's authors conclude: "As the standard medical model is associated with some adverse effects such as long-term medication use and potential side effects, all natural, non-invasive approaches to management should be reviewed. Further research into this mind-body therapy is recommended to evaluate its potential effectiveness for this common condition."

Improved Hearing and Resolution of Ear Infections With Chiropractic Care - A Case Study

A case study research article published on March 25, 2009 in the scientific periodical, the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal and Family Health, documented a case of improved hearing and the resolution of ear infections with chiropractic care. This case followed the progress of a three year old girl who had right and left ear pain and hearing loss after three unsuccessful implantations of tympanostomy tubes as well as multiple medications.

The research article starts off by noting that ear infections are one of the most common diagnoses of children by pediatricians in the United States. According to the study, over one third (35%) of all pediatrician visits in the U.S. in 1990 and 46% of all three year-olds have experienced three or more episodes of this condition.

The case study author also reviewed the literature involving chiropractic care for children with ear infections. Dr. Crystal Brown, the author of the paper noted, "Numerous case studies and some clinical studies are revealing that there is a relationship between abnormalities in the spine, the nervous system and the various problems related to ear infections. These types of structural problems in the upper part of the neck cause a back-up of the lymphatics and problems with the tubes draining the middle ear. By removing the structural imbalance chiropractic helps these fluids drain, and improves nerve supply and range of motion."

In this case the young girl was first diagnosed with ear infections when she was one year old. For the next several years the child had repeated infections that were not helped by multiple rounds of oral antibiotics, ear drops and three separate insertions of tubes in the ears. This case reported that the little girl's health condition continued to get worse to the point where her preschool teacher even began noticing both hearing and speech problems. Hearing tests confirmed these findings and the third set of tubes were removed due to complications of excessive fluid accumulation, rupture of the eardrum, worsening speech disturbances and bilateral hearing loss.

At this point the girl's mother decided to try chiropractic care prior to another set of tubes. The child was examined and the finding of upper cervical (neck) subluxations was made. A course of specific adjustments was initiated to correct the subluxations.

After about one month of chiropractic the child improved dramatically including a normalizing of the audiology testing. The child reported an increase in hearing and told her mother, "I can hear again". The child's mother reported the child had less ear pain, was less irritable, and had better speech. It was even reported by the preschool teacher that the girl was more attentive.

Chiropractic Adjustments Boost Immune Function 48%

Chiropractic adjustments have been known to boost your immune function, and research shows an increase of almost 50%.

The researchers of this project sought to demonstrate that upper specific adjustments would have a profound effect on the physiology, serology and immunology of HIV positive individuals. The effect of specific upper cervical adjustments on the immune system CD4 cell counts of HIV positive individuals was measured by CD4/mm3 in the blood. These tests were performed by the patients independent medical center where they were under medical supervision for the regular group were dramatically increased over the counts of the control group. A 48% increase in CD4 cells was demonstrated over the six month duration of the study for the adjusted group.

Chiro Res J 1994; 3 (1): 32-39.

Research shows that chiropractic care may improve immune response. When vertebrae (spinal bones) are out of alignment, they can exert pressure on adjacent nerves. Since the nervous system controls all functions of the body, including the immune system, it stands to reason that chiropractic care may have a beneficial effect on immune function, in turn keeping disease at bay.

One study looked at the effect of chiropractic adjustments on two specific white-blood cells associated with immune function. Levels of polymorphonuclear neutrophils and monocytes - both of which destroy unhealthy cells - were "significantly higher" following chiropractic adjustments than before (J Manipulative Physiol Ther 1991;14:399-408).

Another analysis included 327 boys and 323 girls, ranging in age from 2 to 18. Ninety-three percent of the youngsters suffered from misalignments of the hips. After reviewing these children's cases, researchers discovered a direct link between misalignments of
the spine and weakened immune systems (JVSR 2004:1-23).

Investigators in Australia also note that chiropractic adjustments may influence key cellular, antibody and endorphin (the "happiness hormone") levels: all of which boost immunity (Chiropractic J Aust 1993;23:132-5).

What Can You Do To Boost Your Immune System?

The 1918 influenza pandemic has been labeled in history as one of the most devastating outbreaks in the history of the world with deaths estimated at between 20 and 40 million people. Over 675,000 American citizens lost their lives due to this awful epidemic. Why are we talking about this? The 1918 flu crisis has been labeled in the Chiropractic profession as the reason for our success and proliferation as an occupation. Here are some of the statistics that give merit to the power of the Chiropractic adjustment:

  • In Davenport, Iowa 50 medical doctors cared for 4,953 cases with 274 deaths. Also in Davenport, 150 chiropractors saw 1,635 cases with only one death. In the state of Iowa, medical doctors treated 93,590 patients, with 6,116 deaths, a loss of one patient out of every 15. In the same state, excluding Davenport, 4,735 patients were seen by chiropractors with a loss of only six patients - a loss of one patient out of every 789.
  • National figures show that 1,142 chiropractors cared for 46,394 for influenza during 1918, with a loss of 54 patients - one out of every 859.
  • In New York City, 950 out of 10,000 cases died with medical methods while 25 out of 10,000 died using drugless methods.

Yes, the medical profession was seeing a majority of the worst of the worst; however, one of the greatest statistics backing chiropractic care comes from the state of Oklahoma. There were 233 cases in which the medical doctors had cared for patients and eventually pronounced them as "lost" or beyond hope... chiropractors took care of all 233 with only 25 deaths.

Chiropractic's journey into health care took a huge leap forward thanks to its incredible effect on the thousands of Americans during the flu crisis. When you get adjusted, you decreased sustained sympathetic tone in your nervous system (bad), which subsequently leads to an increase in immune function (good), among many other benefits (Journal of Neurophysiology, February 2007). An increase in immune function is important for everything from the cold and runny nose to influenza, cancer, and heart disease, not to mention the great enhancing effects on a healthy individual. Hence, Chiropractors encourage everyone get checked if you are not feeling the best. A Chiropractic adjustment will stimulate your immune system to better fight off any illness in your body.

The stresses that people endured in the early 1900s were entirely different than those we incur presently. In order to achieve these dramatic results you must not only get adjusted, but also make changes in your lifestyle so your body can at least have an opportunity to heal. A few simple steps can maximize the effects of your adjustments. Eat more green, leafy vegetables with every meal, take a 20 minute walk outside every day, and have a more optimistic view on life.

Get adjusted today and boost your immune system against any and all 'bugs.'

What else can you do to boost your immune system?

  1. Control Stress - learn to identify and minimize stresses in your life.
  2. Begin and Enjoy Exercise - moving your joints and muscles increases metabolism and substantially increases immune function.
  3. Get restful sleep. Are you waking up refreshed? If not, are you sleeping too much or too little? Do you need a new pillow or mattress? Are there other factors?
  4. Enjoy more fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are key for an optimally functioning immune system. The darker the color the better. The vitamins and anti-oxidants will give your immune system the resources it needs.
  5. Clean up your meals. Are you enjoying a few too many 'treats?' Refined sugar and simple carbohydrates actually suppress your immune function.

The Power of Broccoli

1. The Phytonutrient Superstar

Have you heard about the cruciferous vegetables? Maybe not, but broccoli is one of them--the most popular vegetable from this cabbage group and a close relative of cauliflower, Brussels Sprouts and all forms of cabbage. This cold-weather crop "tree," as children like to call it, is packed with antioxidants, folic acid, vitamin A and C and beta-carotene. Steam a half cup cooked broccoli for about 25 calories and over two grams of fiber.

2. Broccoli Halts Breast Cancer Cells

This vegetable contains cancer-preventive indoles and isothiscyanates that block carcinogens and interfere with the action of a precancerous form of estrogen. Research has shown that the chemical indole-3-carbinol halts the growth of breast cancer cells without actually killing normal cells. This compound works independently of the hormone estrogen which could allow combination therapy with drugs that interfere with estrogen, such as tamoxifen, a potent breast cancer drug.

3. Cruciferous Consumption for Prostate and Bladder Cancer

What about other types of cancer? Greater consumption of dark green and cruciferous vegetables--including broccoli--was associated with a decreased risk of aggressive prostate cancer, biologically virulent and linked to poor prognosis. Add more broccoli for preventive measures. Recent animal studies provide potent evidence that broccoli sprouts have an anti-cancer effect, reducing the risk of bladder cancer through specific compounds, called glucosinolates. During digestion, these are transformed into isothiocyanates, playing a role in cancer inhibition.

4. Add Broccoli to Your Diet

Recommendations for amounts of vegetables and fruits have increased--from the five a day campaign to the current five to nine a day for better health. Although it might seem daunting at first, serving sizes are small - half cups for cooked broccoli or one cup raw. Both kids and adults love broccoli as an appetizer with a low-fat dip or dressing, as a side dish for your protein-rich fish dinner, stir-fried with grilled tofu, or even as a blended vegetable juice with other favorite produce.

5. Get the Most From Broccoli

Cooked broccoli should be green and tender-crisp. To avoid loss of water soluble nutrients, such as Vitamin C, wash it under cool running water. Quickly cut the florets into uniform pieces for even cooking without letting it sit in water. Steam it three to four minutes or simmer for the same amount of time. If overcooked, broccoli develops a strong sulfur odor, turns dark green and suffers nutrient loss, especially Vitamin C.
